2019 saw a new phrase enter the public consciousness in our endeavour to live our lives more sustainably. “Flygskam”, the Swedish for flight shame, is a concept whereby people are beginning to feel, and make others feel bad about taking unnecessary flights. Fueled by climate activism, it’s one example of how people are giving more consideration to how their day to day lives affect the environment.
Brands targeting the next generation, and existing consumers, are taking note and will need to ensure their sustainability messaging is backed up by action. To give you some insights on brands genuinely living their green message, we’ve put together a list of brands that have really upped their sustainability game by doing what they can to reduce their carbon footprint.
Lush has long been one of the eco-friendly leaders in the beauty industry. For years, the brand has been fighting against animal testing and dedicates themselves to create 100% vegetarian products.
They’re strongly passionate about recycling as they encourage their customers to be eco-friendly with the environment by returning their empty packaging in exchange for a free face mask.
The cosmetic brand also released ‘naked’ free products which means 0 packaging for certain items such as their solid shampoos and popular bath bombs. Their core belief in sustainable packaging is refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle.
Outdoor clothing brand Patagonia is not only leading the way with sustainability by using recycled and environmentally materials in their clothing but also in their marketing strategy.
The company is transparent with their customers by being completely honest in that they are not a perfect company as they still rely on fossil fuels for some of their deliveries and other business processes but is always looking at ways for the brand to be more eco-friendly.
They’ve also released ads encouraging people to not buy things they don’t need (even their own items) and implemented a program called “Worn Wear Program” to repair rather than replace their items.
One of the biggest contributors to climate change is the meat industry. The meat production brings a severe impact on the environment and in result to this, consumers are increasingly looking for plant-based meat alternatives.
Beyond Meat is a company that produces plant based meat substitutes. It was established in 2009 and since then has been one of America’s fastest growing food companies. They offer delicious plant-based products such as burgers and sausages that feel and taste very similar to meat.
By switching from animal to plant based meat we will be able to save our natural resources, prevent animal cruelty and reduce our carbon footprint to the environment.
Apple hasn’t always been known to be the most sustainable company when it comes to their products but the tech company is slowly changing and is making sure that they are doing their part for a better future. With the launch of the new iPhone 11, Apple were proud to announce that they used 100% recycled aluminium.
The tech company also offers the ‘Apple Renew’ program which encourages Apple users to switch their old model for something new which promotes recycling. They have a long way to go, but it demonstrates that they are responding to consumer demand and going in the right direction.
The French footwear brand Veja has become one of the leading shoe companies in environmental and ethical production since Sébastien Kopp and Francois-Ghislain founded the company in 2004.
Famously known for its streamlined sneakers, the brand uses raw materials sourced from organic farming and recycled plastic bottles creating a stylish and ethical product.
For them, doing traditional advertising by word of mouth has allowed the company to competitively price their designs while paying for premium materials & fair labour.
What matters at the end of the day is that these brands are acknowledging the climate issue that we’re facing right now and they are doing something about it. Whether it’s a big or small change, it’s the effort that really counts.
