Since all events have gone virtual, a lot of the usual obstacles have been removed. Travel time, big crowds, or traffic won’t deter a potential guest anymore. However, this virtual world brings its own downfalls. All it takes is them to lose concentration for a second, and they’re off. Scrolling through Twitter, checking emails, or a new tab with 9 seasons of The Office is just a click away.
This all means that holding your audience’s attention has never been more crucial. So, with that in mind, we’ve put together 5 tips to engage your audience remotely.
Everything is virtual right now, so something tangible can really stand out. A physical gift or a box of swag really helps create a connection and engagement with the audience. Think snacks, the cocktails from a cocktail class, or clothing to wear. These can be sent out by post prior to the event – technology hasn’t quite got us to 3D printers in every house just yet!
Somebody speaking directly to the camera is only interesting for so long. Make it more fluent with different cuts and camera angles. And, to add more engagement, add in more formats to keep your audience on their toes. Panel discussions, and pre-recorded videos are great ways to mix things up.
Audience participation is key. If you can keep them participating, then they’ll never be lured away to that dreaded new tab. Add in elements to your event that engages them and gets them talking. Live Q&A sessions, breakout sessions, and polls are all sure fire ways to add interactivity. Most platforms like Zoom, Kahoot or Sli.do will have these functions handy.
Not everybody has to be a Toastmaster extraordinaire. But, a confident and competent speaker makes a massive difference when holding a crowd’s attention. If you’re not casting people with screen training, be sure to give them enough time to perfect delivery if it’s pre-recorded, provide an autocue if required, and give constructive feedback and direction on the day.
It sounds almost too simple, but turning elements of your event into a game will make it more fun! This is a great way to keep people engaged, and up their enjoyment at the same time. Scavenger Hunts, Trivia Quizzes, Bingo, and photo contests are just some of the simple ways to add some gamification to your event.
Keep all these tips in mind when organizing your next virtual event, and you’ll no doubt have an engaged and interactive audience. If you want to find out more, or want to organize an event with us, please get in touch.
